IOWA

High energy prices are putting a burden on the economy and the residents of Iowa. By relying on fossil fuels, we are contributing to global climate change. Global warming poses several risks for Iowa, the United States, and the world. Economically, inaction will lead to devastating consequences. If nothing is done to fight climate change, Iowa could lose 9,230 jobs. (i)

At the heart of this problem is our dependence on non-renewable energy sources like coal, which currently provides over 3/4 of Iowa’s energy. (ii)

With an investment in renewable energy, Iowa can create jobs while fighting global warming.

In our state alone, we can generate 2,674% of our energy from renewable sources! (iii)

Here in Iowa, measures have been taken to combat climate change. Iowa is part of the Midwest Greenhouse Gas Reduction Initiative, which requires member states to set timetables for global warming pollution reduction goals, to implement a cap and trade system for emissions, and to join the Climate Registry of greenhouse gas emissions. (iv)

Further action against global warming is needed however, and we need effective leadership in order to follow that path.
